The only reason I'm giving this review 2 stars is because once I was actually able to get an appointment at the office, it was quick and efficient and they were very helpful. I received a letter after filing my taxes that I needed to confirm my identity for my refund to be released to me. I've never had an issue filing my taxes every year so this was a new thing for me. After trying two months of calling the number on my letter and trying to confirm myself on ID.me, having no success and about to give up, I called an attorney who informed me about the Tax Payers Advocate Service number, they are a different department, but do everything over the phone the IRS can. They confirmed me over the phone and got me an appointment at the IRS office downtown within two days and I got my refund 5 days later. I suggest calling the advocate customer service number early in the morning to get into the calling que, you will be transferred and have to wait to 1-2 hours, but you get to actually speak to a real person and they will get you where you need to go. Just have any paperwork on hand in case they ask you any questions, and they can at least schedule an appointment for you at the office if you need further assistance.

Their phone system is designed to hang up on you. If the questions gets too specific it will say “hold on” to then hang up on you after a brief silence. If you attempt to transfer the call it will let you know that “ due to call volume” to try back later or the next business day”. The system is an embarrassment and those behind this are obviously lazy and getting away with it. I think this has to be the most frustrating way to avoid the legit concerns people might have. I mean is there anyone there to even try and do better?

The IRS Agency is a bureaucratic agency that should be put out of its misery since it cannot responsibly deal with the consumer public in a quick, efficient and honest manner. They continue to request 60 day time delays to work on an account that's already been paid, while penalizing and adding fees to other accounts they are supposedly reviewing. If I could do 0 stars that wouldn’t even be good enough. I’ve never actually been able to get ahold of anyone on the phone and I have called and waited on hold more times than I can count. It has been over a year since I mailed in last years taxes and still haven’t got my refund. Just know that if you call say at 3:30 and they close at 4:30 but have an estimated 60 minute hold time, you will eventually get a message saying they are experiencing technical difficulties and have to send you back to the main menu where it's now too late to reach a person. I work in tax resolution and I understand why the new security procedures have been implicated. However, the agents are not properly trained or educated enough to adequately assist a tax professional who knows what they are requesting, let alone a taxpayer who is not aware of the systems. Can't make a payment online ..they won't answer the phones and when I arrived at the location they said by appointment only yet they can't answer the phone or give u a reasonable reason as to why they can't answer. All they advised me to do it to keep calling all day until I get through.
