IRS tax office in San Marcos

I went with my Wife and Toddler for ITIN application today. The guard and the officer, both were very pleasant, patient, helpful and welcoming. Loved the complete experience. The guard even gave us a table to keep our documents so that we don't have to hold it till my turn. Everyone was very nice to everyone. Thank you ! An advice to the applicants- Please make sure that you take appointments before coming. The office is trying hard to accommodate the applicants without appointments also, but if somebody shows up with an appointment, then the ones without appointments will be pushed back in the line and may have to wait till there is gap with no appointments.

Met with Bill at the San Marcos office and he told me he would follow up with information in 4 weeks to a request I had. He DID!! Thank you Bill for your professional follow up.

I would recommend trying another office, it'll probably still be terrible, but less so. Staff is very impatient and rude. I've been waiting for a month and a half for an appointment, to do something that I was never informed I could do online. I learned that information from another customer. Basically if you come here, make sure that you are already a tax professional, as they demean you and have a higher than thou attitude for every question that you have. Also, my appointment was at 11:00. I showed up to the office at 10: 20 to check in, came back at 10:55, and I was just called to be seen at 12:30. Even with an appointment, you are going to end up waiting more than an hour, at least. To the staff, if you were more patient with answering questions, people wouldn't have as many. If you anticipated how people needed help, (because it's your expertise, and your job), you wouldn't have people taking up more time than necessary to fix their issues. Looking for any opportunity to snap, or be rude, or respond in a passive aggressive way, is very childish and not meant for a work setting. And my two hours sitting in this office I did not see one person leave without getting some type of attitude or subtly demeaning comment. Work on your professionalism. The security guard is cool though, he maintained his attitude and was very understanding. He was even the one to inform me why the wait was taking so long and when I would likely be called; not the man at the front desk(whose job it is). Thank you for that, I appreciated someone having a little empathy. I know this review won't affect anything because you guys are a part of the federal government and they're not going to stop paying you, but maybe you should really take a good long look at yourself. If you didn't want to be a tax professional for the rest of your life, maybe you shouldn't have gone for it. Don't take your frustrations out on people that are already frustrated, just because you know they can't respond in the same manner that you talk to them without security having to be involved. Shameful job guys

I made sure to call the IRS before going into the office. I was advised that to do a change of address, I had to drop the form off at the office. Well, I go today and there are signs up saying that an appointment needed to be made yo speak with someone. It also stated that there may be a chance for a same day appointment. I arrive and the security officer asked if I had an appointment. I said no, I was aware that I needed to make one. So, I had to wait until someone was able to see me. Mind you there are no other people waiting or meeting with IRS staff inside. Finally someone comes to the desk and I let him know that I needed to make a change of address and I needed to speak with someone about my stimulus payment. He said that I need to mail in the form and gave me slip to make an appointment to speak with someone. Mind you, I am the only person waiting. I told him that I called the 800 number and spoke to someone who said I needed to bring the form in. He just said I have to mail it in because they don't take those forms. I told him that you need to tell the people to stop giving the wrong information out when you call the 800 number. This trip was a waste of my time. I only gave it 1 star because at least the security officer was nice.

NOBODY ANSWERS THE PHONE! Even the local offices! How in the heck do we get a live person????????? We can’t even create accounts online line because of God knows what! Ugh terrible!

It has been 5 months since I’m waiting for my tax return and all IRS office are closed so no luck to go and see someone to find out why am I not getting my return as non of the numbers work.

Excellent and friendly customer service at the IRS. You have to have an appointment, but my visit took less than 20 minutes in all and I got all the information and forms that I needed. Very pleasant experience.

So there is no way to get in touch with ANYONE at the IRS either at this office or in Washington. So those of us who did not receive the checks we were supposed can just drop dead...this is ridiculous. What happened to the part "For The PEOPLE"

Online it says it’s open but went there in person and it’s closed till January 3rd. Don’t go there.

They were able to give me a next-day appointment, and also able to print what I needed and give to me same-day as appointment. However, they scheduled me a 15 minute appointment because of how quickly it would be, but they didnt see me until an hour and a half after my appointment time because for some weird reason, they had back to back appointments on a busy morning, and only ONE person working for the first hour I was there.

BEWARE!! unless you're first in the morning or have an appointment you're wasting your time here. Security Guard wouldn't even let me in the building at 130 pm. Said 7 people ahead of me and only 1 IRS rep there and he wasn't even at his desk. Unbelievable! Just trying to drop off an amended tax return and a receipt for it. 5 minutes tops needed to handle my transaction.

Went there just to show proof of payment couldn’t get past the man at the front desk, there were two other people in the office and he gave me a telephone number to call to make an appointment so I can talk to him, ridiculous. He was so rude even the lady behind me went off on him and he called the cops on her. This man obviously hates his job and customer service. What a pathetic representative of our government.

Does anyone know if I can go into this office and pay in full what I owe the IRS I call but no answer!!!

If a government agency is supposed to serve the people, and yet, you cant get hold of a single human being for several weeks at a time...if the voice command system informs you to call back another day due to the high call volume, every single day, and when the website was designed by a 5-year old and lacks any real use to the tax payees... that's a sham monopoly and a disgrace.

Here's the deal, I am concerned that anything above a 1 star rating is someone who either works there or has friends working there or got the incarnation of St. Matthew, because this place is bad. Let's review. TRIPLE MINUS! I got there today shortly after they re-opened from lunch, and was about 5 people back. According to the lady infront of me, they had stopped taking people in around 12:00, don't wanna be late for lunch, instead of 12:30 as their hours would have you believe. When I get there it's about 1:45, and the line wasn't moving not a big deal. However, 20 minutes later a tall, middle aged, balding male came out to inform us, AT ABOUT 2:05, that they, the people working in the IRS office there, were "nearing the end of the day and would be slowing things down." I wish to review that statement momentarily. Their hours as posted are 8:30-12:30 (which they stopped, according to the person in front of me, seeing people around 12:00) reopened at 1:30 and close back up at 4:30. Now just do the math, 2:05 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. is over two hours, but they were just starting to slow things down, at 2:15ish the aforementioned male comes back out and tells us no one will be seen for at least 30 minutes as they need to process paperwork. Somewhere in that time the line moved and I was second in line. In front of me was a lady who hadn't seen her return in 4 months and behind me was an elderly couple...the man had to get up and move around a lot as the standing in line was killing his legs. Around 3:00 the man comes out and starts calling for other people. I get the numbering system, those folks were there before us so, first come first serve. However, after peeking into the office, the line (now of over 20 people) was being serviced by the same gentleman, and one person at one window. Two people and only one of them would handle the menial tasks (three guesses who). All the while, while this is going on, other people who work in that office are walking about, giggling, goofing around, talking about how they are clocking out. The staff there was more interested in getting the eff out rather than helping out. The people who worked there walked back and forth, including the hype man, had to have noticed elderly people in that line and instead of offering them a chair or something to assist them, he/they would walk out and do their own thing. Now I get being annoyed and frustrated dealing with people, but when you come out to mention to people what is going on there's a difference between being professional and a phallus cranium. When you TELL people how it will be, rather than try to see and problem solve on trying to mitigate the wait and get to as many people as possible, guess which one you're being. Shameful lack of professionalism seen in that office. I felt bad for the security guard and the police officer there who were quite literally just doing their job AND THEN SOME by trying to be as helpful as they could unlike others people in that corridor. Lastly, finally when myself and the couple behind me get to the counter to mention what we're there for we're told "go over to that table someone MIGHT bring you a number" I want you to know we finally managed our way there about 3:30. So we sit at the table and wait patiently. Around 3:58 we're, the couple and I, are informed that we won't be seen at all because they weren't doing anymore appointments. So they refuse to be courteous to the people there, usually by no real fault of their own, refuse to be professional, and refuse to look at the people in line and see how they can be of service to those people. On top of all of that. They kick people out early for lunch and close, because, Lord forbid, Greg, as I decided to call the glasses man, and the faceless desk phantom have to spend more time helping people. Bonus, the lady got seen and her husband was happy. Major MINUS the couple behind me would drive two hours, round trip, just to stand in like for almost 3 hours to not get seen. I was in & out, fast service to solve your IRS concerns

Once I finally arrived to the San Marcos IRS office, it was awesome! However, I originally called the IRS office 800 number which gave me a second 800 number which gave me a third 800 number I believe I went to for 800 numbers until I finally got so frustrated that I decided to go in. Don't forget... The office is actually closed from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, because it's a Federal institution, there will be a person they're screening everything on your body. The nice thing is, you won't have to throw any bottles of water or any stuff like that away like you do whenever you fly on an airplane. Once you pass your body screening test, there is a very friendly man name greenwood at the front desk. He's nothing like anybody at the DMV or anybody you would assume that would work at an IRS office. Extremely friendly and looks like the guy from the Farmers TV ad... The one who says we know a few things because we've seen a few things. Once he gives you a ticket with a number on it, you will be seated in a waiting room. There will be no phone calls in the waiting area. Once your number is called, I happen to have had a very nice gentleman by the name of Louis. He was nothing like the sloth from the DMV the one from the movie Zootopia. Very friendly and helpful and I was able to get the documents that I needed within a matter of minutes. I you know what they say about death or taxes, but when it comes to taxes, I Ihighly recommend this office!

I came to this irs San Marcos location to see if they can help me fax some papers. The gentleman at the front desk looked at my papers and pointed at a shelf and said you need 8962 paper and just read the instructions. I replied with a confused ok. I walked down the hall with my three babies to sit down the hall to fill out the paper, within 10 minutes the security guard was giving me dirty look because of the noise my kids were making. After another 10 mins I noticed the Irs was going to lunch so I knew I was able to take my time filling out , but again the security guard came to me and asked me to leave the building because my kids were being too loud, I explained him that they are only 1&2 yrs old. They are just being kids. He replied that people are complaining of the noise , I looked around and said no one is in the hall but me and my kids . I replied I will leave the building because I do not want any trouble. I just find it unacceptable to harass a mom and her kids because simply a child makes noise. Two hours later I returned to the building with my paper work and they told me I cannot sit in their office with my kids and have to wait down the hall.but they allowed an elderly couple sit in the office with their dog. . I asked To speak to a manager but replied with we don’t have one 🤔😑 I stayed respectful and sat on the floor in the hallway crying until they decided to help me 😭😩.

I still haven’t received my stimulus check even tho the pointless Trump letter came twice. If they can send that letter- why not my money?

Horrible service and time system. We were waiting there for 3 hours and we did not get a good service at all.Very poor service.

Do not go to IRS without an appointment. Went today(08-Mar-17) at 8 AM without the appointment, expected a queue outside but no one was there(as appointments are mandatory now). We were the first and followed by people with appointments. After verifying the documents, we were asked to wait outside(only people with the appointment are allowed to sit inside the hall) and we were told that they would call us only if somebody does not appear on their appointment schedule. They called us after 1 hr and our work was over in 15 mins. So please make an appointment before you head to the IRS.

Some lazy people from the government do not do anything all day. They serve only as 20 people all day. Loss of time like any bureaucrat. 2 hour to make payment. Ridicule way of our goverment to attend tax payers.we pay them to stay seat all day.

The new security guard is really nice and helpful. As for the office the service it's bad. Just letting you guys know that if u You need a tax transcript or need to make a payment this week 5/16/16 -5/20/16 they aren't attending those who need tax transcripts or need to make a payment and they open at 9:30 this week. When I went there was a line and only one person was working there. So if u need a transcript go to the irs office in san diego that is what they told me. Good luck :).

The wait is gonna be at least 1Hr+ due to staff shortages. But at least you dont have to come everyday.

the building cityhall of san marcos opens at 7:30am but the irs office is on 4th floor and opens at 8:30am i recommend getting there early to get a good spot in line. if your in for forms or payments or transcripts they will pull you out of line and let you go in first. most of the time there is only one employee so if you show up around 10am most likely you wont be helped they go to lunch and come back at 1:30pm and only take people that have been waiting there since the morning best to come in early the next day.

The line is very long, and not fair...they take in people that are there to make payments first

Most of the time they only have one person helping out people.
